Buddy Programme: From monthly check-ins to a valuable collaboration

Hi, we are Helena Wedig and Efe Sözeri.  

Helena works as the Research Software and Interoperability Training Lead at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), and Efe works as a Software Steward at the University of Twente. While our roles might not be the same, we are both part of our local Digital Competence Centers (DCCs), we raise awareness about interoperability, and we provide research software training and support. 

Content-wise, this seemed like a great match right from the beginning! However, the past year showed us that our collaboration goes beyond content. We shared our struggles, celebrated successes, and discussed new challenges, but also did not forget to check in with each other and make sure that we both felt heard and seen. Our monthly check-ins quickly became a routine, and we started looking forward to meeting each other at events.  

Both of us have learned a lot from this match! Among many other things, Helena learned from Efe’s training experience, and Efe got to know the unique way of working at EUR. We also managed to meet up in Rotterdam, share a lunch, and attend the DCC meeting together, which gave not only Helena but her whole team insights into the different ways of working at Twente. 

All in all, this was a great experience and created a connection that goes beyond this year of the buddy program.
